They knew a deserter when they saw one. And they recognized the one within me.
From afar, they looked at me, reminding me of what I have walked away from. They looked for guilt, judged my abandonment and questioned my audacity to do so. And perhaps, just perhaps I noticed a brief hint of envy as well.
And I did what a deserter could do: I moved on, dragging the past and embracing the future.
