And he asked the Skeptic, with genuine curiosity and desire to know: "So, what is this exactly? A mistrust of people? Where did it go? This faith of fellow people, your loved ones? How'd you even get here?"
Skeptic: "The cynicism could not be avoided. It was swift like the punishment from a vengeful God. It simply follows with being around people. Call it self-preservation if you want. But trust is a hard commodity to come by and trust me (pun intended), if possible it is better to not trust than to be betrayed at the hands of someone you believed in."
Him: "I guess this explains your detachment from others and hesitance to rely on them?"
Skeptic: "Parts of it certainly. But the crux does come down to what's the point to begin with? You may pour your heart out in a stream but the water is only going to wash it away. Pour it enough times and there won't be enough left for you. And wherever the stream takes it, it will not be back to you.
Perhaps the key is to find that one river, that one stream which will take you along for the ride. But will you be willing to risk drowning? Once you jump there is not going back. And no gauge to assess the depth and intensity of the waters. And to that note, it boils down to trust and faith. Scary thoughts for a cynic."
Him: "So you are saying not to jump?"
Skeptic: "Hardly. Jump if you must. But for a faithless man like me, I need more reason, more belief. And I expect to find no more."
