Allegiance

There was no point asking for allegiance. He already knew the answer.

So, he found himself making the decision. There was no neutrality here. And he could not in good conscience ask for their allegiance. There was only one way out. Cut himself off, walk away from people he had considered his family for long, from friendships that had taken years to build. Being alone was a high cost. Yet, the only practical way out for him.

But such are the ways of life. Self-pity has no say in a self-imposed isolation.
