Paint away

He pointed towards the canvas: "Paint the future." And he shoved the brush and paint into my hand.

I was a little confused; I am sure you would be too if you were in my position.

"You want me to predict the future ... ?" I asked rather skeptically.

"No, no! You are missing the point!" He was shaking his head. Perhaps some disappointment there that I couldn't understand him.

"Look," he continued, "you don't need to predict the future. In fact I am not even asking you for that. Instead I want you to understand what the future likely could be. You have all the pieces. You know all these people. You have that missing context! More importantly you have the ability to make the connection between them all.

"I want you to envision the likeliest outcome of it all. I want you to know whats happening, understand whats going on."

Was this guy for reals?

He however seemed oblivious of my ever increasing skepticism.

"Remember, the point is not to predict the future, but rather to not be shocked by it. And trust me, you have all it takes to not be shocked," he said, this time oddly reassuringly.

Crazy as it sounds, it was starting to make sense! So I picked the brush and painted away. I was never one to paint a cheery picture anyways.
