Its on the fringe zone of being asleep and waking up that you can sense the reality quickly washing over the dream. In that moment, you can feel the dream slipping away and in order to remember the dream after you wake up, you can make a conscious effort to hold on to one or two of the dream elements.
The problem is, that you have many dream-memory points you can potentially hold on to. You have to make a choice to save a handful of them and once you wake up, all you retain are the dream-memory points you chose to save. You wake up with just these handful of points being fully aware that just a moment ago you had the complete array of dream points. To me this is as fascinating as watching the sand get washed away by the water over and over again, yet oddly enough leaving a trail behind.
